Application for a Type I Fire Safety Tent Permit

Tent: A structure, enclosure or shelter greater than 900 square feet in area or more than 30 lineal feet in any direction, constructed of fabric and having walls on 25% or more of the lineal perimeter.

Please note the following:
  • A separate permit must be obtained for each tent if the tent is separated by more than 5 feet from another tent.
  • Tents greater than 140 feet in any direction or greater than 16,800 sq. ft in area, in use for more than 180 days, have a permanent anchoring system, are being used between November 1 and the following April 1, or contain platforms greater than 11 ft in height shall require a permit issued pursuant to the NJ Uniform Construction Code.
  • An electrical permit is required from the Princeton Building Department if electric lighting or power will be used in the tent.
  • A separate permit is required from the Bureau of Fire Safety if heating equipment is being used in the tent. That permit can be obtained here: Open Flame (Heating) Permit Application
Also note:
  • Cooking under an occupied tent is strictly prohibited as per N.J.A.C. 5:70-3, 2404.15.5
  • Smoking is prohibited in/under any tent as per N.J.A.C. 5:70-3, 2404.6

  • A site plan showing the locaiton of the tent in relation to other nearby structures
  • A Plan showing the location and dimensions of the tables, any platforms or dance floors, cooking appliances (if any), and also indicating the number of persons anticipated at the event; number, location and type of exit (opening or door), number and location of lighted EXIT signs and emergency lighting units
  • A "Certificate of Flame Propagation Performance Treatment" provided by the tent supplier
  • A letter granting permission to obtain a permit for a tent from the property owner if different than the applicant
