Description: Operates one or more types of gasoline or diesel powered equipment to perform assignments to push, pull, pile, lift and load materials; clears brush and debris; levels earth to rough specifications on simple, rolling terrain and/or level surfaces; inspects equipment; does other related duties as required.
Duties and Responsibilities: Operates equipment such as front end loaders and bulldozers to pull, pile, move, turn, lift and load sand, gravel, leaves and refuse at various work sites on flat or rolling terrain. Operates equipment towed by a tractor such as a gang mower, and mows grass, and/or hauls or digs dirt with scrapes or pans. Clears brush, stumps, and rocks on flat and rolling terrain or levels earth to rough specifications at construction sites with simple terrain problems. Excavates trenches and drainage ditches for culverts or streams, and utilizes manipulative control equipment to adjust attachments. Smooths surfaces, repairs small bumps and fills holes. Ensures that equipment is ready for operation at all times by inspecting/lubricating moving parts, inspecting tires for proper inflation, checking brake hydraulic reservoir level and oil level and conducting a general inspection of equipment for obvious deficiencies. Reads instructions and operation manuals to learn correct lubrication, adjustment and repair procedures for assigned equipment. Reports any problems that cause a delay in completion of work assignment to the Supervisor or his designee, whether in writing or verbally. Receives assignments either in writing or orally explaining work to be done and equipment to be used to know the specifics of the assigned tasks. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Maneuvers diesel or gasoline powered equipment with wheeled or crawler type transaction such as bulldozer, front-end loader, motor grader, backhoe, grad-all, and so forth; manipulates controls to adjust attachments for proper positioning on rough, rocky or soft terrain or other sub surfaces that change because of weather conditions which may alter the soil composition to fine grade slopes, inclines, ramps, curves, and excavation by scrapping, scooping, rolling, or leveling. Maneuvers equipment and manipulates different controls to adjust attachments for proper positioning near a variety of obstructions and/or in difficult surroundings such as close buildings, trees, utility wires, drop offs, pipes or rocks to dig or move earth or destroy obsolete brick and stone structures. Reviews with Supervisor or his designee rough sketches or blueprints that are marked to indicate section to be cut, filled, and the level of the finished job to compare terrain at the beginning of the operation with the proposed finished job. In operating equipment, follows all types of alignment stakes which are used in laying out construction projects and their boundaries and reads the information contained on them to know the stationing or location of any part of the road relative to a starting point or reference, the amount of cut and fill to be removed from the existing ground surface or reference mark on the stake at that point, or the shoulder or ditch line when offset stakes are used or the distance from the centerline to stake location. May perform a variety of manual unskilled tasks when not engaged in operating equipment.
Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of equipment utilized to push, pull, pile, lift and load materials, clear brush and debris and level earth or surface. Ability to handle different sets of controls that require good hand, foot and eye coordination needed to operate/ maneuver a variety of equipment. Ability to move equipment in confined areas. Ability to follow specific oral or written instructions. Ability to manipulate different sets of controls used for operating various equipment. Ability to safely control movement of equipment and estimate distance. Ability to sight inspect equipment for tire/brake wear to ensure safe operation of equipment. Knowledge of the assigned equipment and its limitations in performing a variety of tasks. Knowledge of blade positioning to fine grade surfaces, incline, slopes, and curves on all types of terrain. Knowledge of adjusting, oiling, and maintaining equipment in a safe operating condition. Knowledge of accident prevention procedures for operating assigned equipment. Ability to follow specific oral or writing instruction concerning the work assignment. Ability to maintain concentration, alertness and an exceptional degree of visual and physical coordination. Ability to grade surface to fine specifications by adjusting attachments while the vehicle is in motion on all types of terrain. Ability to simultaneously operate controls, make difficult clearance judgements while watching the load, and compensate for variation in the equipment’s lifting or hauling capacity during positions changes. Ability to understand equipment and its limitation on all types of terrain. Ability to work without direct supervision. Ability to manipulate attachments rapidly to adjust to the changing condition of the surfaces. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50lbs. by him or herself without any mechanical aids. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recoding and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position, American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Experience: Two years of experience in operating and maintaining one or more types of gasoline or diesel powered construction equipment such as a bulldozer, front-end loader, crane and backhoe.
Requirements: Appointee must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Must satisfy employer paid physical, drug screen and criminal background check. Must have a valid NJ Driver’s License in good standing if driving municipal vehicles. NJ residency required by State Statute. R.S.52:14-7.
