Residential Rental Property Registration Form
Princeton requires owners of residential rental properties to register their properties with the Princeton Department of Emergency & Safety Services, Bureau of Housing Inspection.
Please note that an agent must be designated for any individual owner who does not reside nor have a place of business in Princeton or within twenty miles of Princeton, and in the State of New Jersey, or if ownership type is a Corporation, Partnership, or Limited Liability Corporation. An “Agent Designation/Certification” form must be submitted with the registration. The link is available in the registration application.
All one and two family residential rental units in Princeton must receive an inspection of both interior and exterior areas every two years to ensure compliance with the Princeton Housing Code. Homeowners will be notified when biennial inspections are due. Every attempt will be made to coordinate these inspections during a mutually agreed upon date and time. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice shall be given to the primary occupant of each of the rental units by the property owner or designated agent, informing them of the scheduled date and time of the inspection. Inspection fees will be invoiced when the inspection has been completed. Inspectors are not permitted to accept payment for inspections at the time of the appointment. A Rental Housing Certificate of Compliance will be issued when all fees have been paid and no violations are noted, or all noted violations have been abated.
